Traditionally, when one places similar objects together in an orderly manner, the items get placed in distinct columns and rows. This is called a 'rectangular' arrangement. × . . . more

Lewis K., May 10, 2009, 8:25AM EDTEdward, Pike is indeed the captain of the Enterprise at the beginning, and is the person who pursuades Kirk to join the Academy. How Kirk gets the job I won't say, but Pike had an important role in the film.

Sarah A., Apr 30, 2009, 4:08AM EDTAh, OK. No, I was just kidding, though when they do, it's amazing. Have you ever heard of MathCamp? 100 teenage mathematicians with a faculty to match.. My son went twice and the stories he brought back made me wish I could go too. They did the coolest stuff!
You are a math guy, I take it? -
Kimber L., Apr 29, 2009, 9:28AM EDTThank you for all the comments you left me. As for the question you asked - yep she thought up all the poses herself - she was playing I was just taking photos

Sarah A., Apr 29, 2009, 4:11AM EDTWas it this one?
When my math kid was in 3rd grade he asked me how computers work and I said:
You know how the 1's place is 10 to the 0 power and the 10's place is 10 to the first and one tenth is ten to the -1?
Yeah, he said
Well, you don't have to use 10. You can use any number. If you use two, you only have two digits, 0 and 1. If you think of an electrical switch with on being 1 and off being 0 you can write any number as a series of switches. That's how computers do it.
Next day he went to school and did his homework in base 11. "I chose 11 because it's a prime number" he explained "and I made up a symbol for the 10, but I had to ask the teacher if it would still be called a decimal point"...
Does this answer your question?

Sarah A., Apr 29, 2009, 4:00AM EDTNo, but he's on Facebook, I think. He's at the University of Oregon now, doing math/comp sci. I've written about him in several places including a post, now removed, and some comments I made to answer the post about "There are only 10 kinds of people - those who understand binary and those who don't" - where did you see the ref to him?
